The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) started the discussions on the first day of the GOMUN 2021, this Friday (23). In the first session, the main topic was the definition of the subjects to discuss at the event. The conflicts in Southeast Asia and COVID-19 consequences were one of the priority topics defined by the council. It took the whole morning of the session to define the topics to be approached over the event.

Through the second and third sessions of the event, the delegates gave their pronouncements, focusing mostly on the COVID-19 crises. The People’s Republic of China delegation expressed the joy of being part of the event as one of the permanent members of the UNSC. The delegate of China manifested the constant efforts to contain the coronavirus crises in its country and their neighboring countries of East Asia. She said that China can support any country that needs help and it can provide the CoronaVac and vaccines input for the rest of the world as well.

The Myanmar delegate asked for the help of the other members of the UNSC to contain the financial crises in the country, so it could solve the COVID-19 crisis. Russia’s delegate made a speech about the importance of vaccination for the resolution of the economic crises around the world. “It’s a crucial matter”. He highlighted the partnership with China and India to produce and distribute the Sputnik V vaccine and defended a global plan of vaccination based on the Russian vaccine.

The representative of Saint Vicent and the Grenadines used strong words to criticize the Russian delegate. In her point of view, he was using the platform of the UNSC to advertise its vaccine. Over the event, she stood up a lot of times to defend her position, being an active voice through the first day of debate.

Another question raised between the discussions was the situation in the Philippines. The country is facing a violent war against drugs, and the members of the council criticized several times the hostility of the local government against its population. The Myanmar government also received critics, in view of the civil war situation that is forming in the country.
